History
The Monastery was founded in 1153 by Count Ulrich von Pernegg, originally it was a Premonstratensian Monastery, and at the same time he called nuns to Castle Pernegg which is only 5 miles from Geras.
In 2003 Pernegg and Geras celebrated the 850 year
foundation – jubilee and due to that occasion the front of the new building, west front of the Monastery and celebration stairs have been renewed.
Monastery Geras is located on a historical, cultural spot; it has been builded on an slavonian grave field
and despite multiple destruction nowadays the foundation which is in basic in romanic style as well as gothic parts are still visible.
Today’s appearance of the Monastery is mainly the result of enlargement and new arrangement at the time of Abbott Nikolaus Zandt. From 1730 – 1746 he engaged
high ranked artists as the leading one‘s Josef Munggenast as architecture and Paul Troger who made the fresco.
The wing of the new building with its prestigious entry, originally builded in 1740, has been renewed last year.
The new colour-concept, yellow areas with white formations and single silver grey focuses, are based on old drawings of the monastery and stylistic analogies of other works of Munggenast. After the new design of the facade, the areaway was set in front of the Monastery’s entry.
In the end the prestigious stairs have been maintained. The restorer report found out that originally five historical colours from different eras have been used. Decision was taken to use the original baroque colour on the wall.
However, the celebration stairs, the artistic highlight, got lost in 1870 when the ceiling caved-in.
Even this very day in the cavetto can be proofed the luxuriant scenic design and moreover the complete ceiling was covered with a fresco.
A new luminary has been created and the larger-than-life statue of Pallas Athene, the ancient greek goddess of wisedom, located in the slot at the end of the stairs has been renewed.
